from Latin placebo “I shall please,”
future indicative of placere “to
please” (see please). Medical sense
is first recorded 1785, “a medicine
given more to please than to benefit
the patient.”
Placebo Effect
a beneficial effect produced by a placebo drug or treatment, which cannot be attributed to the properties of the placebo itself, and must therefore be due to the patient's belief in that treatment.
We always feel good when we throw things into the recycling or composting rubbish bin, because we feel that we do good for the environment. But
few people are actually aware of the real process of recycling, or if recycling really does good to the environment.
Wishful Recycling
Old English wyscan “to wish, cherish a desire,” from Proto-Germanic
*wunsk- , from PIE root *wen- “to
desire, strive for.”
early 14c., from wish (v.).1520s,
from wish (n.) + -ful.
tossing items in the recycling bin that you hope are recyclable or think should be.
Sometimes we “wish” our trash can
be recycled, and throw a combination of recyclable and non-recyclable trash into the bin. This causes
extra labor to distinguish the trash,
and can even cause harm to the
workers. These trash usually end up landfilled.
Waste Hierarchy
a tool used in the evaluation of processes that protect the environment alongside resource and energy consumption from most favourable to least favourable actions.
late 14c., jerarchie, ierarchie, "rank in the sacred order; one of the three divisions of the nine orders of angels;" loosely, "rule, dominion," from Old French ierarchie, from Medieval Latin hierarchia "ranked division of angels", from Greek hierarkhia "rule of a high priest," from hierarkhes "high priest, leader of sacred rites," from ta hiera "the sacred rites" + arkhein "to lead, rule".
Many people may think that recycling is one of the best way to help reduce pollution and save the environment. But actually, it is just a little better than landfill. There is nothing to be delighted about when we recycle things, especially when we toss everything into the recycling bin without thinking. Reducing and reusing are always a better choice.
Contamination
a process of contaminating : a state of being contaminated.
Contaminate: to make unfit for use by the introduction of unwholesome or undesirable elements.
early 15c., contaminacioun, “infection,” from Medieval Latin contaminationem (nominative contaminatio) “a polluting, contamination, defilement,” noun of action from past participle stem of Latin contaminare “to defile, to corrupt, to deteriorate by mingling,” originally “to bring into contact,” from contamen “contact; pollution,” from assimilated form of com “with, together” + base of tangere “to touch” (from PIE root *tag- “to touch, handle”).
When people throw things randomly, recycling contamination is created. Soft chip bags or paper boxes with food inside cannot help with recycling, but rather harm. This creates extra burden on the recycling factories, and these trash, which might be composted or recycled if sorted properly, might end up in landfill.
Cost
c. 1200, “price, value,” from Old French cost “cost, outlay, expenditure; hardship, trouble” (12c., Modern French coût), from Vulgar Latin *costare, from Latin constare, literally “to stand at” (or with), with a wide range of figurative senses including “to cost,” from an assimilated form of com “with, together” + stare “to stand,” from PIE root *sta- “to stand, make or be firm.”
The price paid to acquire, produce,
accomplish, or maintain anything.
Recycling and composting both costs more money and effort. According to the research, recycling costs roughly 2 times of landfilling. The problem of recycling contamination even increases this cost. Yet the cost for us to "recycle" a trash is simply: 0. Rather than regulating ourselves to consume less or think of ways to reuse, we simply throw things for recycling.
35%
of Municipal solid waste is recycled in 2017. It has raised from 6% in 1970; but still, nearly 50% are landfilled.
25%-30%
of the recycled trash finally ends up in landfill, regardless the reason. Considering the how massive the amount of trash is, this percentage means a lot more threat to the environment.
$50-$150
is the cost for recycling trash per ton for a well-run curbside recycling program in the US. While recycling materials can be cost-effective, transportation, labor and factory all suggests that recycling is not a profitable market.
67%
of the used pizza boxes are throwed into the recycling bin, yet they are actually non-recyclable. Misconceptions vary from trash to trash.
27.2%
of recycle loss can happen because of contamination. Sometimes, when the amount of recycled trash increases, the actual amount that finally gets recycled decreases, surprisingly.
0
is the cost for most people to recycle a piece of trash, both time and money. While "reduce" and "reuse" may require time to plan and consider, recycling is a way that people can feel good without taking any responsibility.
